A British sniper set a world sharpshooting record by taking out two Taliban soldiers in Afghanistan from more than a mile and a half away — a distance so great, experts say the terrorists wouldn’t have even heard the shots.

Craig Harrison killed the two insurgents from an astounding distance of 8,120 feet — or 1.54 miles — in Helmand Province last November firing an Accuracy International L11583 long-range rifle.

“The first round hit a machine-gunner in the stomach and killed him outright,” said Harrison, a corporal of horse in the British Army’s Household Cavalry, the equivalent of a sergeant in the American military.

Making a killing suit is hard work, and it will take some time and requires lots of patience. They are used for concealment in the terrain it was designed to be used it. Below listed are the steps required to make one for yourself.

Items needed

1 set of BDUs or jumpsuit plus a boonie hat that matches terrain type
Enough netting to cover the front and back side of the BDUs or jumpsuit with about 1 inch squares
Hot glue gun with plenty of glue sticks

Burlap or Jute thread (preferably jute thread) amount depends on how thick you wish your suit to be, use best judgment Powdered Rit Dye, 1 box for every color desired, use website to help mix colors www.ritdye.com/Create+Custom+Color.9.lasso
At least 1 bucket

Optional: Clothing Iron – this will make applying the netting easier.

Step 1: Unthread or unravel the burlap or jute, this will take some time if you are using burlap.
Step 2: Cut into pieces about 2 feet in length.
Step 3: Depending if the netting can be dyed, it will also need to be dyed along with the burlap/jute.
Step 4: Separate the burlap/jute into X number of piles, X = number of colors you want your ghillie suit to have.
Step 5: Follow the directions for the dye, this is where the buckets come into play.
Step 6: Let the burlap/jute completely dry.
Step 7: Find a open spot to place the BDUs or jumpsuit down.
Step 8: If you are using the clothing iron, use that to flatten the suit.
Step 9: Pull the netting over the suit as best as you can, you might need something to make the net not move.
Step 10: Use the hot glue gun to glue the netting onto the suit, careful not to burn your fingers.
Step 11: Once glued on 1 side, cut the excess netting off.
Step 12: Don’t forget the hat too.
Step 13: The the glue cool down, then flip the suit over and glue the other side.
Step 14: Once complete start tying the burlap/jute on the netting, use about 5 strands per square
Step 15: Mix the colors up when tying them.
Step 16: Verify that the ghillie suit is thick enough, and has enough of a certain color you desire.
Step 17: If the suit is satisfactory you are complete, if not, then tie more strands of burlap/jute to suit your desire

Notes: Ghillie suits can be very hot inside, use a camelback. Burlap and jute are highly flammable, recommened that you use fire retardan

Buying your first airsoft gun that is high quality is the beginning of a fun and enjoyable hobby. However, to new players, airsoft guns all seem similar, and they end up choosing the cheapest gun, which often isn’t as high quality as they hoped it would be. I know the first airsoft gun is a hard choice, but here are the steps that helped me choose my first airsoft gun.

First, establish your price limit. Your first airsoft gun will seem very costly, and it is important to decide how much you are able to spend on it. If you feel you will be serious about this sport, I urge you to scrounge up at least $250-$300 for a high quality first airsoft gun.

For those not as sure, Echo-1 airsoft rifles are a great first airsoft rifle for beginners. They cost just over $100, and can help a beginner decide if they would like to get into airsoft seriously. The are a decent first airsoft rifle, but if you have enough money and are serious about the sport, I suggest that you invest in a better first airsoft rifle. Many people purchase a cheap first airsoft gun, and continue to get other cheap guns because they aren’t satisfied with their first airsoft gun. All the money spent on cheap first airsoft guns could be put towards a high quality airsoft gun, that will be durable and reliable.

The next step of buying your first airsoft gun is to decide the role you would like to play. Do you want to be the player up close in the action with BB’s flying by you, or do you want to be a silent player in the background, supporting your team. Determining your playing style is crucial to figuring out the best rifle that will fit your needs. The first airsoft rifle needs to fulfill the accuracy and size requirements of your role.

Ask yourself what position you would like to play. The four most basic roles are:

CQC (Close Quarters Combat) - The soldiers dealing with ranges of less than 40′. They clear buildings and rooms. They use short rifles so that they can go around corners and through doors easier. They use airsoft guns like: Mp5, P90, and G36C.

Rifleman- For your first airsoft rifle, this role is very well suited for the beginner. These are the common soldiers who form the bulk of a squad. They deal with a variety of ranges from 15′ to 150′. They use airsoft guns like: M4, Ak47, AUG, G36, and everything in between.

Support Gunner- These soldiers support the squad with large volumes of firepower. They use large and heavy airsoft rifles to pin down the enemy while the rest of the team moves forward. This can be an expensive role, and may not be a good choice for the
first airsoft rifle. They use airsoft guns like: m249 SAW, RPK, and FAMAS.

Sniper/ Marksman- These soldiers can either provide support for the squad, or go lone wolf. While it is a very interesting role, it can cost a lot of money to purchase and upgrade your first airsoft sniper rifle. They use spring or gas airsoft rifles like: VSR-10, Bar-10, PSG1, and L96.

Be careful at this step. I have seen time and time again new players who immediately leap for the sniper position. Movies and video games hype up the sniper role too much. In airsoft, snipers can not easily pick off people at ranges farther than 300′. It is a very costly role, and does not suit a new player well at all. Please reconsider being a sniper, it limits your options on the field, and a sniper rifle is a bad choice for your first airsoft gun.

After you have decided your role, choose your first airsoft rifle that fits that role. Consider the length, weight, accuracy, rate of fire, and upgrade ability of potential first airsoft rifles.

The best way to choose your first airsoft rifle is to go to a large airsoft retailer website, and browse through the pages of guns. Remember, a high quality first airsoft electric rifle will cost no less than $180. Shopping for the best deal will leave you unhappy and disappointed in the sport.

At this point, find the rifles that will suit your role, and use a combination of factors when deciding your final choice for a first airsoft rifle.

The easiest factor is deciding your first airsoft rifle’s visual appeal. Your first airsoft rifle should just plain look good to you. Choose a style that you like the look of, and could see yourself using on the field.

Next, research the performance and quality of your first airsoft gun. Make sure it meets your needs for the role.

Choose a first airsoft gun that has upgrade potential. This requires research to be sure you can upgrade it. Big name brands often have great upgrade potential, such as Tokyo Marui, Classic Army, ICS, G&G, and KWA.

This all requires a lot of research. Search for reviews of the gun, and read as much as you can before buying your first airsoft gun. Narrow the choices down to 3 name brand rifles, and compare the stats of them. Scour the web for information on your choices, and be sure that the rifle is
high quality and performs well. This is the most important step, do not skip over researching.

Finally, prepare to place an order for your first airsoft gun. Make sure you will have a battery if the gun is electric, a magazine, high quality BB’s (not cheap Walmart BB’s), and a charger. Find a reliable online airsoft retailer. This also involves some researching to verify the retailer is trustworthy. Order away, and wait for your first airsoft gun to arrive soon.

Once it arrives, be sure to keep the airsoft gun in tip-top shape by cleaning it often. Use this guide to help you clean your airsoft gun.

Throughout history the sniper has been crucial to battlefield success in nearly every war. A sniper brings many things to the battlefield other than marksmanship and long distance shooting ability. When you have a gifted shooter on your side that person can change the course of a battle by taking out significant leaders and causing fear for the opposition. A good sniper can be just as damaging in a psychological sense than from a pure damage sense. When you take a look at the past wars you can find snipers and sharpshooters that almost single-handedly changed the outcome of history.

During the Civil War it was Col. Hiram Berdan that commanded the 1st and 2nd US Sharpshooters for the Union army. These units were equipped with the legendary Sharps rifle that gained fame as one of the finest shooting rifles of the period. Hiram Berdan was the top shooter in the military for 15 years in a row leading up to war and in order to join his divisions men had to pass extremely difficult shooting and vision tests. The researchers claim that these Sharpshooter divisions caused more casualties than any other division during the history of the war.

While you cannot consider him a true sniper Alvin C. York most certainly held the skills necessary for the position and is remembered as one of the finest sharpshooters in military history. It was during World War I in 1918 where he almost single-handedly killed and captured 157 German soldiers. He led a small platoon to take out a German gun placement. After most of his group were put out of action he proceeded alone armed with just a rifle, pistol and a keen hunting sense. Alvin C. York killed 25 and captured another 132 German soldiers knocking out numerous gun positions and returning home a hero in the process.

One of the most popular snipers in history is Russian sharpshooter Vasily Zaytsev. It was during World War II at the Battle of Stalingrad where Zaytsev made his mark and struck fear into the hearts of German officers. Vasily Zaytsev is credited with 242 confirmed kills during the Battle of Stalingrad and over 400 confirmed kills for the entire war. It was his duel with top German sniper Heinz Thorvald that gained with worldwide attention. While there is much speculation as to whether or not the encounter ever happened the story is interesting all the same.

The man that many people consider the greatest sniper and shooter in American history is Carlos Hathcock II. With just 93 confirmed kills the numbers fail in comparison to the others already mentioned but the way he obtained those kills gained him legendary status. One of the most amazing stories is how he crawled 1,000 yards over the course of 4 days through enemy patrols to take out a highly ranking Vietnamese general. Then of course you have the time he time he took out a Vietnamese soldier from over 2,400 yards away. Perhaps the most important thing he ever done had little to do with sniper skills when he pulled wounded marines from a burning vehicle. The burns and injuries he received ended his career as a sniper in the field but he would continue on as an instructor.

I saved Finnish sniper Simo Hayha for last because he is one of the most underrated snipers of all-time. In just 100 days from 1939 to 1940 Simo Hayha is credited with over 500 confirmed kills against the invading Russian army. He was called “White Death” by many due to his solid white uniform and sniper tactics that involved him tunneling through the snow. The fact that he done all of this using an older rifle without a scope makes these numbers even more impressive. It is said that Simo Hayha recorded over 800 unconfirmed kills.

As you can see throughout history several men have helped change the course of battle with amazing displays of marksmanship and courage. With warfare slowly turning more towards the urban setting the use of snipers will likely increase to save military and civilian lives. As long we have war there will always be great shooters scanning the battlefield and changing the way battles are fought.
